Grown Folks Nation: Blue Eyed Soul With AWB

I absolutely love the Average White Band! In fact, I will say they are my favorite non black group edging out Steely Dan and Queen by a nose. There are too many jams to list but here a few of my favorites:

1. A Love Of Your Own - This is a beautiful love song. I remember hearing it when I was a kid. This was before MTV and videos. Back then you did not know if a group was black or white. It was just good soulful music

2. School Boy Crush - I must admit - I did not hear this song until Too Short used in the 90's for his hit - Life Is Too Short. The good thing about is that the beat was so dope that Ant Banks (Too Short's Producer) did not have to fattening it up at all

3. Queen Of My Soul - This is my favorite song by AWB period!! The reason I like it so much is because it talks about their love for music. "Sweet Music, Your The Queen of My Soul!!" Let me know what!!!

Grown Folks Nation: You Are Never Too Old To Learn A New Trick

About three weeks ago I was having breakfast at Panera Bread. I met a interesting gentleman whose name was Bob. He was tall slim dude who looked to be in his late 50's. He approached me after seeing my Mac computer. "Do you have the new iPhone?" he asked. I did not!! He proceeded to show me how cool it was. The video features, new applications and all the bang wiz that makes Mac users cooler than PC people. He told me he was a retired roofer but loved to swim and produce music for his own consumption. We talked for about 20 minutes and exchanged information. We stayed in touch via email and talked about doing a small video project together.

We ran into each other again today and the same place. This time we chatted for close to an hour about him living in Hawaii for over 20 years and his music. I asked him how long he had been a musician. The answer caught me off guard. "I started when I was 50", he said with a smile!! I won't give away his age but he has played for almost 20 years. Clearly the daily swimming has been good to him. Bob explained that is never too late to learn. The key he explained is to practice everyday. A wise man told him "It is better to practice a little everyday than to practice a long time every other day"
Bob has an iPhone, takes great pictures, uses Garage Band and is dabbling in video production. He is older than my parents who have basically stayed out of technology because of their age. He has encouraged me to do three things:

1. Take Up A New Instrument
2. Train My Parents On The Mac
3. NEVER STOP LEARNING
