Grown Folks Nation: Pretty Young Thing Family Remix

One day last year my kids and I were cleaning up. It was kind of boring. NO it was very boring. I had just bought this new camera (Panasonic HVX-200) and wanted to test it out. Since it has a hugh learning curve, I figured I have some fun with it. The video is of us doing PYT by the late Michael Jackson. I found it last week while clearing space off my hard drive. This video proves that my household NEVER stopped playing MJ! We did not go out and buy all his records because we already had them. So look past the missing files and overexposure. Look at the fun we are having!! Let me know what you think

Grown Folks Nation: Discipline Through Sports Analogies

I love to use sports analogies as a teaching tool. One day a about a year ago, my son was supposed to be up on the roof at the pool. When my daughter went up his was not there. It turns out

he stopped at a friends loft on the way up. My wife was pretty upset and launch into one of those motherly "We were concerned about you, we thought someone grabbed you" tongue lashings that
every kid gets from his mom. It is almost always followed by the dreaded "Wait until your Dad gets home"!!! He had the look of fear when I arrived. Rather than conventional methods of discipline, I took the opportunity to show him the video of "THE CATCH". Most people know about the CATCH It means different things to different people. (Especially in Dallas) In this version, Bill Walsh explains it and it unfolds thanks to Steve Sabol and the good people at NFL Films

I told him "Son - Joe Montana could not see Dwight Clark but through years and years of training and practicing he KNEW exactly where he would be. I NEED to have that same feeling about you. I will tell you I had to leave the room because I was almost laughing out loud for sounding like Bill Walsh, Bill Belichick and Bill Cosby at the same time!! Do you have any sports analogies??

The Birth Of An Entrepreneur

This weekend my son along with his Grandmother rented a booth at a Back To School festival in South Dallas. He decided he wanted a new drum set and this is the way he will pay for it. He has been playing drums for over 8 years. Up until this point in his life, I have bought all of his drum gear. Under the training of his Grandmother, his story was honed. He started of by saying he was raising money for ANOTHER drum set without much emotion. Granny told him to say "Hello, I have been playing drums most of my life, I am raising money to buy myself a drum set. Would you like to support me by buying some M&M or Skittles for $1?" She also told him not to just sit at the table but to walk around and target adults. It worked like a charm!! He netted over $90 in about 4 hours!! I learned that as a sales person when you make a good sale that you IMMEDIATELY go on another sales call to keep your MOJO working. So when he got back home, he approach our next door neighbor about walking their dog for $5 a day. She said yes!! Here is the best part: He told her that she could pay by the day OR to make it easier she could pay the entire week in ADVANCE!!!! She took the entire week option and handed him $40. After paying for his candy and booth, little man pocketed $92 and has a $45 a week paying gig. WOW!! At the end of the day, he sold me a pack of M&M's. When I opened them, asked for some!! Some things never change......Now I know how I am going to retire

Grown Folks Nation: Blue Eyed Soul With AWB

I absolutely love the Average White Band! In fact, I will say they are my favorite non black group edging out Steely Dan and Queen by a nose. There are too many jams to list but here a few of my favorites:

1. A Love Of Your Own - This is a beautiful love song. I remember hearing it when I was a kid. This was before MTV and videos. Back then you did not know if a group was black or white. It was just good soulful music

2. School Boy Crush - I must admit - I did not hear this song until Too Short used in the 90's for his hit - Life Is Too Short. The good thing about is that the beat was so dope that Ant Banks (Too Short's Producer) did not have to fattening it up at all

3. Queen Of My Soul - This is my favorite song by AWB period!! The reason I like it so much is because it talks about their love for music. "Sweet Music, Your The Queen of My Soul!!" Let me know what!!!

Grown Folks Nation: Grown Man Barbershop!!

Last week my friend Ace opened an high end salon for professional men. Barbershops are my favorite places to hang out. I have been in shops all across the country. I must say I was truly impressed with this shop. I enjoyed the complimentary beverages, the wi-fi and the overall style of Diverse Cutz! I normally enjoy the family atmosphere of regular barbershops. BUT this was for GROWN FOLKS!! My son is welcome BUT only if he is with me. No drop offs! But there is more -wait until you see the bar, lounge and the best part THE BATHROOM! Let me know what you think!!
