Grown Folks Nation: You Are Never Too Old To Learn A New Trick

About three weeks ago I was having breakfast at Panera Bread. I met a interesting gentleman whose name was Bob. He was tall slim dude who looked to be in his late 50's. He approached me after seeing my Mac computer. "Do you have the new iPhone?" he asked. I did not!! He proceeded to show me how cool it was. The video features, new applications and all the bang wiz that makes Mac users cooler than PC people. He told me he was a retired roofer but loved to swim and produce music for his own consumption. We talked for about 20 minutes and exchanged information. We stayed in touch via email and talked about doing a small video project together.

We ran into each other again today and the same place. This time we chatted for close to an hour about him living in Hawaii for over 20 years and his music. I asked him how long he had been a musician. The answer caught me off guard. "I started when I was 50", he said with a smile!! I won't give away his age but he has played for almost 20 years. Clearly the daily swimming has been good to him. Bob explained that is never too late to learn. The key he explained is to practice everyday. A wise man told him "It is better to practice a little everyday than to practice a long time every other day"
Bob has an iPhone, takes great pictures, uses Garage Band and is dabbling in video production. He is older than my parents who have basically stayed out of technology because of their age. He has encouraged me to do three things:

1. Take Up A New Instrument
2. Train My Parents On The Mac
3. NEVER STOP LEARNING

Grown Folks Nation Alert: It IS Tricking If You Got It!

My buddy Jerome has a unique perspective on the phenomenon of "Trickin". There are a lot of youngsters going around and saying "It Ain't Trickin, If You Got It". Jerome thinks it is ESPECIALLY Trickin if you got it. He explains that if you really had GAME, you would not need a Bentley or feel the need to make it rain in the club!! It takes more than a fancy car and some shiny jewelry for Jerome to co sign that a person had GAME!! What do you think?

I Thought Magic Johnson Was One Of The Good Guys!!

I don't get to the hood that much anymore. I stopped by a grocery store in South Dallas yesterday and what I saw disappointed me greatly!!! My child hood sports idol. My business idol and Hall of Fame basketball player, Earvin "Magic" Johnson is a spokesperson for of all places "RENT A CENTER"!!! What's that all about!! What message does that send? "If you can't afford a $300 laptop, we can sell it to you for $25 a week for only one year!! WAKE UP! That is $1200. Hello - I guess Magic is a business man and that is one hell of a mark up in the name of "helping families rebuild their credit". I bet when they go to buy a house, the lender will laugh a person out of the office if there only good credit line is a loan shark, furniture store called Rent A Center. What's next Magic, "Rent A Rim"? How about Magic Johnson Pawn Centers or Magic Johnson Detention Centers, where you can get on probation if you can make 8 out of 10 free throws!!

The message needed from someone like Magic is, 'If you cant afford a $300 laptop, cut your Cable, Caller ID and Ring tones off, save your money, THEN get your laptop free and clear. Until then go to the library or the computer lab at the Workforce Commission or at school. It's called DELAYED GRATIFICATION!!. I watched the commercial on the Rent A Center website.....It started off well. Magic was explaining how hard his parents worked to provide a better life for his 10 brothers and sisters. BUT then it went left when he said "Rent A Center helps provide you with what you WANT for your family"...Not what you NEED!! Then they show the nice furniture, fancy laptops and big screen TV's. That's is just what people NEED now.....More stuff they can't afford, high interest and added debt. Yet another TRIPLE DOUBLE for Earvin Magic Johnson!! What do you think??

Eat More Chicken

This has to be the most successful fast food campaign since "Where's The Beef" from Wendy's in the 80's. My son and I happened upon "Cow Appreciation Day" at Chick Fila. If you come dressed as a cow you get a free meal. It is for today only. I asked them if it counted that I weigh as much as a small cow. They said no! Stop by and paint some spots on your shirt! As you can see from the pics, some took Cow Day more seriously than others. For more info go to www.cowappreciationday.com
BTW- It was a great marketing promotion that was family friendly. Not ghetto like the Popeye's promotion!
