I have been coaching football for 2 years now. I absolutely love it. It's not so much about the football. It is about working with young men and helping them progress and reach a goal. We have two very good coaches and a bunch of well meaning fathers. Some of the dads help out but do not know a lot about football. During the first few weeks of practice, they would scream at the boys threatening them with "running til you puke" and push-ups.
After a couple of weeks of this I could not take anymore. I pull the parents to the side and told them "PUSH-UPS" are good for you! Why are we punishing the boys with activities that are actually beneficial? To prove my point, I gathered the boys asked them a question: Who wants to win? They all said ME! Are you willing to do what it takes? YES!! To be prepared for the season, we have to be fit. We have to be able to run at full speed in the fourth quarter. We have to be faster and stronger than the other teams SO - That means we are going to run, do a lot of push-ups and other exercise that will get your bodies and minds ready to win. The boys went wild and were excited about getting in shape. I hear parents say things like "Stop watching that TV - read a book! or "Stop playing that video game - Go outside and play!! The better approach would be not to assign the beneficial task as the punishment. What do you think?
